Tumblr will prohibits pornography and nudity on 2020

Tumblr

The blogging platform Tumblr is always known for allowing pornographic content, especially from LGBT communities. This will end on December 17. It could be Apple.

Tumblr porn should be free. This is a bitter frustration for interested interested users: the blogging platform was known as one of the few main web sites in the US where nudity and pornography were presented differently from pure porn sites. Although primarily based on the supposed taste of heterosexual men and ranked algorithmically, Tumblr provided artists, LGBT communities and non-commercial users with a space for self-curated, alternative content.

Tumblr boss Jeff D’Onofrio now writes that he wants to make the platform “better and more positive”. Without pornography and nudity, Tumblr “had the opportunity to create a better place where more people were comfortable expressing themselves”. In addition, “adult content websites do not have trouble”.

Apple throws Tumblr from the App Store

The decision is estimated to be related to November 16. That day, Apple removed the Tumblr app from the App Store after finding depictions of child abuse that Tumblr’s filters didn’t discover. The big ban on nudity and pornography could be D’Onofrio’s attempt to return to Apple’s main distribution platform.

Specifically, “adult content” should no longer be allowed. According to Tumblr’s definition, this is “any representation as well as photos, videos or GIFs showing real human genitals or female nipples – including pictures of sexual acts”.

The exceptions apply to the nipples, for example in the context of “breastfeeding, birth and health-related conditions”, such as “mastectomy or sex assignment surgery”. Erotic texts and nudity in art and current news are also allowed. This is evident from the updated user manual.

Tumblr’s image recognition critique

Any person who has already published content relating to Tumblr’s definition of pornography and unwanted nudity will be notified by email, including the opportunity to appeal. As of December 17, the corresponding content can only be viewed by the relevant users themselves.

Photographer Nate Igor Smith has already received these emails and has complained about the obvious suitability of Tumblr’s image recognition software. Among other things, they marked pictures of male nipples, pictures of mannequins in their underwear, and photographs of a woman eating ice cream as prohibited material.

Tumblr is owned by Verizon’s Sworn Affiliate, which has more than half a billion users and also includes AOL and Yahoo. The pornographic content rate on Tumblr is estimated to be between 10 and 20 percent.
